Now I like to laugh at the Three Stooges and Charlie Chaplin and Jerry Lewis the same as a lot of people but Roberto Bignini just doesn't quite measure up to this level. I'll just TRY to explain why I feel the way I do about this movie. I won't go into the plot because it's already been covered in several other reviews. And believe me when I tell you that it won't take you long to find that out. (Forget about $63.00 for a new copy.) To put it simply and bluntly, this is simply not a funny movie. They see all of the good reviews for this movie and think that this must be a good movie and they don't want to rock the boat so they just go along with everybody else and write a good review also.īy doing this you are doing a disservice to the people who are reading these reviews to try to decide if they should spent $20.00 to buy a used copy of this movie. That seems to be the prevailing feeling of most of the reviewers of this movie. But for the most part, "Il Mostro" is a predictable pseudo-comedy.In the fairytale all the people are telling the emperor that his new clothes are beautiful just because that is what everybody is saying when, in fact, he isn't wearing anything at all but no one wants to be the one to stand out from everyone else and tell him. There are several amusing vignettes Benigni, even hamstrung by his script, is still Benigni. An intended comedy of errors in which Benigni's typically bumbling protagonist is mistaken for a deranged and dangerous criminal, the film limps from scene to scene, its pace quickened only by infrequent sputterings of Benigni's pantomimic muse.
The delightful, irreverent flights of improvisations that have made Benigni Italy's favorite - and most provocative - comedian fall flat here.
The genial and outrageous Tuscan comic once again seems bridled by his own script and medium. For whatever reason, Roberto Benigni's "Il Mostro" (The Monster) provokes more winces than grins, and more yawns than both. Perhaps it is the timing of the release, concurrent with the real-life multiple-homicide trial of a man known as "the Monster" of Florence.
Perhaps it is the film's grating plot: the search for a serial sex killer.
